Which Metal Type Should I Get For My Engagement Ring?

Are you ready to design your engagement ring?

We tone match for foundation, but why not for jewelry? We’ve all done it! When you are looking for a new foundation or God-Forbid, they discontinue your trusted makeup; the first thing we do is match our skin tone.

No one wants their face painted with a slightly orange hue. If you’ve searched for the right foundation before, you might have purchased one that should have been perfect, but something was slightly off.

That “slightly off effect” is your skin’s undertone and not having the right undertone for your foundation match. You might find the perfect shade,  but that undertone is critical!

We spend a lot of time and money finding the perfect shade with the right undertone for our makeup… but do you do the same with your jewelry?

It’s likely that if you are looking for an engagement ring, diamond earrings, or a luxury jewelry item, you’ve done your research… at least on the item, but have you considered what piece is right for your skin?

You might LOVE rose gold engagement rings, or maybe white gold is the only thing you can think of wearing as a diamond wedding band, but if you take a little extra time to find your perfect tone match for jewelry, your engagement ring will sparkle even brighter!

Matching Your Jewelry To Your Skintone

If you’ve matched your skin tone for your foundation before, you might already know your skin tone and undertone.

Discovering your undertone is simple! For jewelry, let’s keep it simple and break it down into three simple categories.

Light:
Individuals with light skin tones originally came from Northern Europe. Our skin tones are thousands of years of evolutionary history in the making! Those with lighter skin tones had ancestors who had more limited access to the sun.

You know what that means… you might burn easily! If you are a fair beauty, you’re more likely to have sensitive skin and sunburn. (Make sure you apply your SPF)

Medium:
Those with a medium skin tone likely have South Europe or Asia ancestors. You might be one of the lucky gals who is a queen at tanning! Those with medium skin often have beautiful olive skin.

Dark:
If you have rich medium-dark to very-dark skin, your roots might have come from the Middle East, India, or Africa. Your skin has evolved over thousands of years to protect you naturally from the sun.

Matching Your Jewelry To Your Skin's Undertone:

You know your category of skin tone, but what is your undertone? First, what exactly is an undertone?

Undertone is unchanging and is the hues that come through your skin, almost like a thin veil of color. Three basic undertones play a big role in what metal type will look best on your skin.

Cool Tones: pink, red, and blue tones underneath the skin

Warm Tone: yellow, golden, and green tones underneath the skin

Neutral Tone: olive or mixed tones underneath the skin

How do you determine your skins undertone?

If you are unsure how to determine your skin’s undertone, you can try a few different tests!

The Vein Test: Make sure you are under natural light for this test. Take a look at your veins. Are they blue or green? Can you tell?

If your skin tones are blue, your undertone is cool. If your veins appear green or gold, you are warm-toned. If you can’t tell… you’ve guessed it, you’re neutral.

The Silver Or Gold Test: This test is a fun one! Try it on. Whatever jewelry you have around the house, or better yet, come into Buchroeders and try some of our luxury jewelry.

Which looks better with your skin tone? If you love yellow gold, you’re a warm-tone gal. If silver makes you sparkle, we recommend you select white gold or platinum.

Princess cut diamonds are the most popular among fancy cut diamonds due to their versatility and brilliance. When looking for engagement rings, a princess-cut diamond might be on your list if you are a bride that loves a clean modern-style ring.

If you’re skin tone and undertones indicate that you should have a white gold engagement ring setting but don’t want to be washed away with white, keep in mind that your skin will take on and compliment the elegance in your light white jewelry.

We recommend diamonds or pearls when considering stones for your cool skin tone. Your fair skin is the perfect setting for these brilliant white features

Warm Tones:
If your skin is golden like the sun with cozy warm undertones, yellow gold will bring out the most in your skin and draw attention to your most beautiful features and, of course, your new diamond engagement ring.
