Why are lab grown diamonds less expensive than natural?

This is truly the most commonly asked question our clients have. If lab grown diamonds are defined as “real diamonds” and share the same physical and chemical characteristics as naturally mined diamonds, why are they priced significantly less? The answer is this;

Lab-grown diamonds are typically priced lower than natural diamonds, often with a cost difference of up to 50% for naturally mined diamonds of similar grade. This is primarily because lab-grown diamonds operate outside the same supply chains as natural diamonds, resulting in more favorable pricing for consumers. With advancements in manufacturing techniques, as manufacturers refine and enhance their processes for creating lab-grown diamonds, it is expected that the cost of these diamonds will progressively decline.

Are lab-grown diamonds also called "synthetic" diamonds?

No, lab-grown diamonds are not considered to be synthetic diamonds. In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission revised its jewelry marketing guidelines, removing the term "natural" from the definition of a diamond. As a result, lab-grown diamonds cannot be labeled as synthetic because they are composed of pure carbon, which is the same material found in natural diamonds. Since they share the same chemical makeup, both lab-grown and natural diamonds are considered diamonds.

Do lab-grown diamonds have a lower value compared to natural diamonds?

It's essential to recognize that the monetary value of a diamond is determined by the market and what customers are willing to pay for it. No diamond, regardless of its rarity or perfection, possesses an inherent value on its own. If a lab-grown diamond is properly identified and acknowledged as such, it will generally have a lower value compared to a natural diamond with similar characteristics, reflecting the lower initial purchase cost. However, it is crucial to choose a diamond engagement ring not solely based on its potential for financial gain, but rather as a symbol of love and commitment to your partner. It's important to note that an appraiser would not diminish the value of a lab-grown diamond simply because of its origin; rather, they would assess it using a different value scale.

Furthermore, the technology behind lab-grown diamonds is still advancing, which could impact their value. If production becomes more efficient and less costly, the price of lab-grown diamonds may decrease, subsequently affecting their value. Additionally, if future generations place less significance on diamonds as symbols of love and marriage, both lab-grown and natural diamonds could experience a decline in value due to decreased demand.

Are lab grown diamonds as durable as natural diamonds?

Yes. In fact, lab-grown diamonds consist of carbon, just like natural diamonds. They retain the remarkable durability of natural diamonds making them exceptionally resistant to chipping. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) acknowledges that lab-grown diamonds possess the same level of hardness as natural diamonds, scoring 10 on the Mohs scale. This rating signifies that lab-grown diamonds, like natural diamonds, are highly resistant to scratching and can withstand daily wear and tear. Therefore, lab-grown diamonds exhibit the same level of durability as their natural counterparts.

How do inclusions or "flaws" in lab-grown diamonds compare to natural diamonds in terms of their impact on sparkle and clarity grade?

GIA clarity scale

Lab-grown diamonds, being grown rather than built, are susceptible to developing inclusions, which can affect their sparkle and clarity grade. Similar to natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are assigned clarity grades ranging from Flawless (F1) to Included 3 (I3). The presence of inclusions in a diamond can result in a cloudier appearance and lower its clarity grade.

We ensure that all our lab-grown diamonds are accompanied by a certificate from reputable non-profit grading laboratories such as GIA or IGI. These certificates authenticate the assigned color and clarity of the diamonds, providing customers with reliable information about their quality.
